Lichen Walk + Survey on Mcbee Grade with Jessica Allen
Sunday April 28th 1-4 PM
Join us for a hike around McBee Grade with Jessica Allen, EWU assistant professor of biology, lichen expert and author of Urban Lichens: A Field Guide for Northeastern North America. Jessica and one of her grad students will show us how to ID a few common lichens in our area. From there, we’ll use our skills to seek out and survey for lichen species. And of course, there will be many wildflowers on hand to observe and ID!
Meeting Point: Horse Heaven Hills/McBee Grade—Meet at the McBee Grade Trailhead. Take the Benton City Exit from I-82 and use the roundabout to head south on Webber Canyon Road. After about a mile, take a right onto McBee Grade. The trailhead has a pullout to the left after you cross the canal as you head up the grade. We’ll start at the lower trailhead before driving up to the ridge line.
Things to note: We will be walking over rocky terrain with optional elevation gain. Closed toed shoes, water and hiking poles recommended if needed. As part of this walk, we will be creating an iNaturalist survey so downloading the iNaturalist app before the hike is recommended. Have a hand lens handy? We recommend bringing it!
